FOREWORD TO SECOND EDITION

The discourse on “Dhammadayada Sutta” was delivered by the Venerable Mahasi Sayadawgyi on the anniversary of the Ovada and Puja which fell on 1326 B.E. (December 1970) at the Fan-Yin Dhamma Hall of the Mahasi Meditation Centre. This discourse was again given on the anniversary of the Ovada and Puja of the following year in ( December 1971). However, the fair manuscript was finally edited only in 1978. The first Myanmar Edition was published in June 1979 and the last Edition, the fourth, was published in 1993.

In order for the foreign yogis and meditators to study, the Buddha Sasana Nuggaha Organization had entrusted this discourse in Myanmar to Sayagyi U Aye Maung (2.2.1914 - 11.5.2002) to translate into English. The first abridged English translated work was published in January 1982. This is one of the five discourses translated into English by U Aye Maung. The other discourses are Ariyavasa, Sallekha Sutta, Sakkapanha Sutta and Paticcasamuppada.

The first Impression of English Book was out of print for sometimes and Buddha Sasana Nuggaha Organization has now published it after 33 years as the Second Edition. In this edition, we included a photo of the Venerable Mahasi Sayadawgyi and a brief sketch of his biography as well. We had also corrected some printing errors and omissions of the First Impression.

An excellent introduction to the discourse on “Dhammadayada” made by Bhaddanta Kondala, a meditation teacher of Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha was included in the First Myanmar Edition. This introduction, unfortunately had not been translated into English by Sayagyi U Aye Maung. However, he prepared a synopsis of the discourse as an introduction, and it was included in the first English Edition.

Since this introduction was again included in this Second Edition, we do not repeat anything about this discourse, and we conclude our remarks with our prayers to all Buddhist monks and lay followers alike to follow the teachings in this Discourse and to be able to realize eternal peace of Nibbana by constant and diligent practice of Insight Meditation.
