Foreword To Second Edition
Culavedalla Sutta is one of the most prominent Sutta of Majjhimanikaya describing the questions and answers between a very rich man Visakha, an Anagami or a non-returner, and his wife Dhammadinna who became an Arahat, during the time of Lord Buddha. The Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw first delivered this sutta on 8th waxing day of Waso month of 1326(M.E) (17th June 1964), and continued for eleven Sabbath days, finally completing on New Moon day of Wa Khaung(6th September 1964).
The type-written draft of this discourse was edited by Mahasi Sayadaw himself and was first published in late 1978. The Second Edition was published in June 1994 and since then there were two reprints of the Second Edition. All these publishing were done by Seikkhun Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha with the approval of Mahasi Sayadaw.
For the Foreign yogis, the Myanmar text was translated by U Min Swe, the Secretary of the Buddha Sasana Nuggaha Organization in 1981 and the First Edition was published in December 1981, by the Buddha Sasana Nuggaha Organization. Since this First Edition was out of stock for sometime, we are pleased to publish this Second Edition. Bhikkhu Pesala also edited the First English Edition in 2013, removing many of the Pali words, attempting to standardize the translation of Pali terms, correcting many phonetic Myanmar variation of the Pali, amending many English words also and including an index /glossary. This Edition was published on the Internet with a PDF file.
Our Second Edition, however, was entirely of the original
English First Edition, only correcting some of the printing errors. Both the
First and this Edition do not include the translation of the introduction compiled
by Venerable Pyinyathami, a meditation teacher at the Mahasi Meditation
Center in the Myanmar Edition.
This Sutta truthfully recorded the precise and accurate
answers given by Dhammadinna Theri is respect of Buddha’s Dhamma. Lord Buddha
himself had confirmed these answers and extolled her noble qualities and
gave her the highest Order of Dhammakathika
(Dhamma Teacher.)
May you all who read this book be also to follow these
teachings by practising meditation and attain Nibbana.
