FOREWORD TO THIRD EDITION
On 20th December 1977, U Pwint Gaung, the then President
of the Buddha Sasana Nuggha Organization requested Mahasi Sayadawgyi
to deliver a Buddhist discourse which would be universally applicable to all human
beings. Sayadawgyi was, at that time, compiling a discourse on “Sakkapañha Sutta”, so he delivered that discourse on new moon day of
Pyatho, 1326B.E. (7th February 1978) at Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha.
The written discourse was printed and published only in
1979 after Sayadawgyi instructed one of his chief disciples, Venerable Indaka(Nyaung
Gan) on 3rd March 1978, to write an introduction to the discourse, which introduction
was finished on 15th March 1978.
Up to now, there were four Myanmar Editions and these
Editions had been published by Satipatthana Vipassana Propagation Group
of Mawlamyaing Taung Wain Galay Mahasi Sasana Yeiktha with the approval
of the Venereable Sayadawgyi.
An abridged translation of the Myanmar discourse was made
by a noted author U Aye Maung who had also translated some of the discourses of
Sayadawgyi, and the first English Edition was published in December 1980 by the
Buddha Sasana Nuggha Organization, followed by a Second Edition in April
1995.
Since both Editions were out of stock now, we are pleased
to publish this Third Edition which includes a photo of the Venerable Mahasi
Sayadawgyi and a brief sketch of his biography. We had also corrected some
printing errors and omissions of the previous Editions. For easy reading and reference
we also include an Appendix summarising 14 Questions asked by Sakka, and
the answers given by Lord Buddha.
In the previous Editions an abridged translation of Ven Indaka’s
excellent introduction or Preface which mentioned about the Sakkapanha
Sutta was included. Since this translation was also included in this
Edition, we do not need to say anything about this discourse.
We therefore conclude our Foreword with our prayers for all readers to understand fully the questions raised by Sakka, the King of Devas, concerning the whole mankind and illuminating replies of Lord Buddha, superbly clarified by Mahasi Sayadawgyi.
